Church and State
Note: The Compagnie des Cent-Associés (company of the hundred associates) made the first attempt to colonize New France. The king granted it a monopoly on the trade in New France. In exchange, the company pledged to have colonists settle on the territory. As stated in the quote below, how was religion the “heart of the colony”?
“We have learned, and hold as a hard and fast rule, that to form the body of a good colony, one must begin with religion, it is to the State what it is to the heart of man’s composition, the most vital and invigorating part. In all instances, we will ensure it presides over New France.
